So twice a month I’m going to review restaurants, café’s, etc. We’re kicking off the series with Het Oude Tolhuys. A cozy restaurant, hidden away in the forest in Utrecht. The location is perfect for anyone who wants to go for a hike and have a place to sit down before or after. It’s located on the Weg naar Rhijnauwen road, at the edge of Utrecht, almost in Bunnik.
Het Oude Tolhuys Utrecht
Het Oude Tolhuys has a nice garden, where you can sit at picnic tables or at regular tables on the terrace. Since it’s in the forest and not in the city center, you can sit in tranquility on the terrace. However, this doesn’t mean there’s no liveliness, because people hiking, biking or kayaking in the surroundings come to sit down on the terrace.
The staff is friendly and makes you feel at home. We’ve not only sat on the terrace here, but also inside and enjoyed the coziness and ambiance that they’re created there.
Oude Tolhuys Menu
Het Oude Tolhuys has a modern Dutch cuisine with French, American and Indonesian influences. On their lunch menu there are dishes as a steak sandwich, sweet potato taco’s, grilled chicken salad and a Surfers burger. Next to meat dishes, they also serve vegetarian. For dinner there are dishes such as rendang, loaded fries, BBQ peach salad and smoked celeriac. They also serve snacks, sides, pastry and ice cream. There’s apple pie and bitterballen.
Next to lunch and dinner Het Oude Tolhuys also serves brunch for groups, high tea and tapas. We’ve had the high tea as well as the tapas, and loved both. They serve a delicious high tea with sweets and savory dishes and plenty of tea. The tapas was a few years ago and consisted of 3 courses.
Right now because of restrictions they only serve take away. You can get coffee, tea, hot choco, flammkuchen and pie the whole week. From Thursday to Sunday they also have take-out meals available.
Het Oude Tolhuys also has several conference rooms available to work in, hold meetings or parties.
They offer themed parties and an escape room, there are lots of combinations possible for groups.
In winter time curling is a possibility and in the summer suppen. Next to this there’s plenty of possibilities for exercise in the vicinity , such as kayaking on the Kromme Rijn.
To summarize: Het Oude Tolhuys is a great place to sit down for the afternoon.
