Mummy Cookies, on parchment paper on a plate

Mummy Cookies

Last Tuesday I had a Halloween themed baking day with Yuri and his nieces. Each year we have one or more baking days, my sister and I. I then bake several things with Yuri and my nieces. This year we baked 3 things, among them Mummy Cookies. It was lots of fun, preparing these cookies. No actual baking involved, since I used store bought cookies.

We used two different kinds of cookies: Bastogne koeken and Spritzen. Dipped in white chocolate with candy pearls for eyes. Only 4 ingredients so super simple. The mummy cookies recipe is adapted from a video off Chelsea’s Messy Apron.

Another Halloween recipe on the blog is Halloween Sangria. When looking for different chocolate cookies try out the Oreo Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies or the Chocolate Almond & Cranberry Clusters.

Review

Mummy cookies for Halloween is an excellent idea, the kids made them with almost no help from me. The recipe asks for Double Chocolate Milano cookies. As they’re not that easy to get in the Netherlands, I used different cookies with roughly the same shape. The Bastogne koeken gave the best effect. I used white chocolate bars instead of chips. For chips I have to go down town, the bars I can get at the closest grocery store. As vegetable oil I used sunflower oil.

For pearl sprinkles we used green, red, gold and silver pearls. I already had those at home. The kids made the bandage idea with a stick, instead of piping it on the cookie. They didn’t feel like doing that and this went faster they said. My son opted to make alien mummies, with one or several eyes, instead of two. I made one batch with 2 eyes for each mummy.

Allergies: gluten, wheat (when using gluten and or wheat free cookies, this can be avoided), sugar, dairy.

Ingredients

1 package Sprits cookies

¾ package Bastogne cookies

3oo grams white chocolate bars

½ tablespoon sunflower oil + extra

50 silver, gold, green and red pearls

Instructions

Place 3 plates on the counter and line them with parchment paper, set aside.

Break the white chocolate bars in small pieces. Melt the white chocolate au bain marie. Add the sunflower oil to the white chocolate.

When the chocolate has melted, spoon melted chocolate over 2/3rds of the cookies. Place the cookies on the parchment paper. With a wooden stick make stripes cross wise to give the idea of bandages. Then place 2 pearls on them (or more if they’re alien mummies). Repeat with all the cookies.

When the chocolate hardens again, add ¼ teaspoon of oil. We had to do this twice. Allow the cookies to completely dry.

Notes:

  • Recipe source is the website Chelsea’s Messy Apron.
  • Enough for 25 cookies.
